About

I am a historian of twentieth-century European and international history. My research and teaching focuses on politics, economics, international institutions, and war in the 19th and 20th centuries. I also write about current political and economic issues for a variety of publications.

I was born in the Netherlands and grew up in Belgium. I studied at University College Utrecht (BA), the University of Cambridge (MPhil), and Columbia University (PhD). Since 2019 have I taught at Cornell University, where I am currently Assistant Professor of Modern European History in the Department of History.
